Foreword

The Language of Seasons’ is a collection of thirty poems. As I read each poem, the transition of emotion from autumn to summer in Aditi’s magical choice of words felt like the quiet transformation of life in reality. The seasons have a way of speaking to us without words as they come and go in their own time, never hurried or needing our permission. Her poetry captures this truth which is both intimate yet beautifully universal.

The depiction of autumn through the metaphor of the nightingale is such a powerful image. The once confident nightingale loses its voice challenged by uncertainty and change. While Autumn feels like the season of endings, it is a reflection of what has been lost, and also the pause before renewal. The reader experiences a sense of nostalgia and melancholy like walking through memories and time that is fleeting.

The winter descends bringing with it ambiguity and a world suspended in thick fog. The intelligent imagery creates an immersive experience for the reader who realises that even in moments of despair and challenges, it is important to remain steadfast and keep hope. Aditi’s growth as a writer is most evident from her poems on winter as she signals the importance of acknowledging one’s grief as the gateway to finding our joy.

Spring is showcased as steadfast resilience. The depiction of this season in some poems is bold, unapologetic and filled with courage, whilst gentle, tender and almost magical in others. The poems in this section of the book remind us of renewal of love, mystery, wonder and gentle endurance.

The summer poems almost feel like the triumphant finale. Where the birds sing again.

Not just a familiar song, but notes that have known silence, difficulties and a quiet courage. The joy one experiences at the end of the book feels earned: The Language of Seasons is after all the language of our own journeys, of loss and renewal, of waiting and awakening, and of endings that make way for beginnings.

To Aditi whose words fill these pages: It is no small thing to capture the rhythms of nature and the emotions of the heart with such honesty. Your poems remind us that wisdom can come from the youngest voices. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement!
